"Any idea when you're speaking to the Haim sisters?" a message reads. "I was hoping to ask if I can become their fourth member."

There is only a single issue: The sender also wants to be Haim's additional sibling. Furthermore, we are far from alone. Multiple famous supporters have openly begged for the position.

It's clear an irresistible appeal is happening. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana began their career playing gigs at local delicatessens with their parents. Today, they are repeated Grammy contenders.

In the tradition of the most iconic bands, they're a close unit. Their music videos repeatedly show them walking in harmony down the streets of Los Angeles. During performances, they jam with such boundless joy you find yourself thinking, "I want to be part of that, too."

"The numerous instances on tour that young girls approached us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I got a bass'," states Alana, the youngest of the sisters. "It is the ultimate honor. That's an award in itself. We've done our job if we can inspire others to form a group."

"So all are welcome to be the honorary part of the family."

Award Milestone

The trio are connecting from a break, where they're resting up after an extensive tour in for their fourth album, I Quit.

They're right now reeling from the news it's been nominated for a top rock honor at the Grammys – with Haim the very first all-female band ever in contention for the prize.

"I watch the lists every year, so it kind of feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is called," says Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this correctly or am I dreaming'?"

The importance of the nomination resonates with the band.

"We deliberately set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a huge step," continues Alana. "But we're just thankful for the pioneers that inspired us."

Emotional Upheaval and Humour

The record emerged from a period of personal change. All three sisters ended up single, and the music explores that unique transitional period where you're happy to be free, but not quite ready to move on.

The words detail departures and goodbyes. The sisters desire love, but not the relationships they've got. You can hear them determining in real time who they want to be.

"I adore way of putting it, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is like a mantra. You have to consciously practice shutting out the noise and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Development of Music

That recent toughness required a different sonic direction – more organic and powerful than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that started with the drums.

"Percussion is such a nuanced thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our memoir," jokes Alana. "I've said it, our albums won't commence until we find the right drum sound."

Anecdotes and Shared Humor

The band's openness fueled the album's rollout, where the sisters disclosed some of their romantic horror stories.

Someone ended things with Este over a health concern. Alana shared a story of travelling to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"During these breakups, you just feel like there's only darkness," explains Alana. "Thus to be able to find humor in those stories and have them tell you wilder stories, it's therapeutic."

An Assured Legacy

One can easily sense a evolution in the band. These days, Haim are more assured of their standing in the rock pantheon.

They're top-billed acts, with successful albums and an global following.

However the band will consistently be their top focus.

"Me and my siblings have been performing since I was little," shares Alana. "There is no other path that we were meant to do. And I'm really grateful we've reached this point and we're still making music."
