Growing worries are present regarding the possibility of military engagement involving East African neighbors, the Ethiopian government and the Eritrean government, as confrontational language has escalated in the past few weeks.

What Has Ethiopian Officials Stated?

Landlocked Ethiopia's requests for access to the Red Sea through Eritrea has triggered a fierce war of words.

The Ethiopian leader initially stated publicly in 2023 that his country's maritime access was an crucial concern, remarks that Eritrean authorities dismissed.

Relations between the both governments have regularly been difficult. Following a prolonged struggle for freedom, the Eritrean state, which has a long maritime frontage, officially seceded from Ethiopian rule in the early 1990s, rendering it cut off from the sea.

Five years later, a military clash erupted in which over a hundred thousand people were killed.

Latest Remarks from Ethiopia's Leadership

Abiy and military leader Field Marshal Birhanu Jula have directly stated sovereignty of Eritrea's coastal city of the port of Assab – approximately 60 kilometers from the boundary - and implied the wish to take it by force.

On 1 September, Abiy said Ethiopia's "blunder" of losing access to the Red Sea as a result of Eritrea's separation would be "addressed in the future".

The Ethiopian envoy to neighboring Kenya, ex-military officer Bacha, said that Assab was "Ethiopia's wealth" and would be restored "by force".

Eritrean Response to the Claims

In the face of ongoing warnings from Ethiopia, Eritrea's reaction has been restricted to concise remarks on social media from Communications Head Yemane G..

He has rejected Ethiopia's demand for sea access describing it as "hazardous" and a "negative policy" of "territorial claims" – a approach of reclaiming lost territory.

Government spokespeople cautioned on recently that attempts to validate "blatant hostility" would have serious consequences for Ethiopia and its neighbouring countries and is a "boundary that should not be crossed|violated|breached".

Security Activities on the Border

There have been few indications of major military movements in the frontier regions between the two countries.

Nonetheless, in Ethiopia, state television has shown graduation ceremonies of numerous trainees at various military training camps.

The leader of staff section of the defense force, General Hachalu, recently said in an interview that the defense forces was in a "secure situation" as "tens of thousands of youths" were entering service, which he said was "a message to our opponents".

Past Background of the Dispute

For more than half a century from 1890, Eritrea was ruled by colonial powers.

Following World War II, it was then administered by the British administration before becoming a federated part of the Ethiopian empire.

However in the early 1960s the ruler terminated this arrangement and the region became fully incorporated into the Ethiopian state.

A thirty-year armed struggle occurred, finishing with Ethiopia's defeat in 1991. Autonomy was then confirmed by Eritreans in a referendum in 1993.

Temporarily in the 1990s, there were friendly connections between the authorities in Ethiopia's capital and Asmara, but they disagreed over the precise positioning of their shared boundary, causing war in 1998.

Although this finished in a peace deal in 2000, it was incompletely executed, and the both countries remained at in dispute.

This situation improved in 2018, when Abiy made gestures to Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki. The two signed a statement that the war was over – a action that gained the Prime Minister the prestigious award.

The two governments were then allies in the country's recent internal conflict in the northern region.

But relations have later worsened anew.
