Tetris Didn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Could Fix That

As any prominent awards ceremony nears, there’s always a clamor for the addition fresh award types to honor unsung work and delight the spirits of followers dedicated to specific genres.

Another commentator has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. So would strategy board titles, which is a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist when I prioritize just as with other blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case for why my demand remains most pressing and significant. This is the request: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Categorizing Game Types

Categorizing art by genre is not a science; it remains highly personal, and inevitably spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that cinema institutions avoid this approach. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise for the industry of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse they hardly constitute as a single art form.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies presently include award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these classifications successfully include many game types, allowing placement for numerous titles.

Different situation exists for puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Consider three of recent excellent titles, all very different: building puzzles from a specific release, intense tile-matching of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. What category would fit them between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

The Representation Problem

Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games released every year lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated for anything in 2014
  • A different innovative game received no nominations during that ceremony
  • A beloved organization game got ignored that year
  • Just some puzzle games managed to sneak into niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent modest productions, however the design behind logic titles is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles stand as the most-played games in the world and have been for many years.

The iconic tile-matching title competes with well-known building titles claiming status as most purchased experience; it additionally competes as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, and engaging with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators are working at the challenging frontier interactive creation, creating some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
